Steel beam and channel sizes and weights: HEA, HEB, IPE, IPN, UPN and UPE tables (EN 10365)

Size and weight tables for hot-rolled HEA, HEB, IPE and IPN beams and UPN and UPE channels to EN 10365: depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, kg/m, area, Iy and Wel,y.

Updated October 16, 2026

These tables list the hot-rolled I, H and U sections in our range with their nominal dimensions, weight per metre and major-axis properties. Each designation links to its own page with the full set of properties, including the minor axis, plastic modulus and radius of gyration.

Which standards apply

  • EN 10365 gives the dimensions, masses and section properties of hot-rolled I, H and U sections. It replaced the DIN dimension standards: DIN 1025-1 (IPN), DIN 1025-2 (HEB), DIN 1025-3 (HEA), DIN 1025-5 (IPE), DIN 1026-1 (UPN) and DIN 1026-2 (UPE).
  • EN 10025-2 covers the steel grade. Our beams and channels are listed in S235JR.
  • EN 10034 sets the shape and dimension tolerances of I and H sections; EN 10279 does the same for channels.

HEA, HEB, IPE or IPN, UPN or UPE?

  • IPE — narrow parallel-flange I-beam, flange width about half the depth. The efficient choice for beams bent about the major axis: floor beams, purlins and secondary members.
  • HEA and HEB — wide-flange H-sections. Up to size 300 the flange width equals the nominal size (HEB 200: b = 200 mm); from 320 upward it stays at 300 mm. HEA is the lighter series, HEB the heavier one with thicker web and flanges. Both are common for columns and heavily loaded beams.
  • IPN — the older I-beam with tapered inner flange faces. Still specified where drawings call for it, for example on crane runways and in refurbishment.
  • UPN — channel with tapered flanges. UPE — channel with parallel flanges, which makes bolted connections simpler because no tapered washers are needed.

How to read the tables

  • h — depth; b — flange width; tw — web thickness; tf — flange thickness. All in mm.
  • kg/m — nominal mass per metre.
  • A — cross-section area; Iy — second moment of area about the major axis; Wel,y — elastic section modulus about the major axis.

To estimate tonnage: kg/m × length (m) × number of pieces ÷ 1000 = tonnes. Example: 10 lengths of HEB 200 (61.3 kg/m) at 12 m weigh 61.3 × 12 × 10 ÷ 1000 ≈ 7.4 t.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HEA and HEB?

Both are wide-flange H-sections of the same nominal size. HEB has a thicker web and flanges, so it is heavier and stiffer: HEB 200 weighs 61.3 kg/m against 42.3 kg/m for HEA 200, which is also 10 mm shallower.

How much does an IPE 200 weigh?

IPE 200 weighs 22.4 kg/m. It is 200 mm deep and 100 mm wide, with a 5.6 mm web and 8.5 mm flanges. A 12 m length weighs about 269 kg.

Should I use UPN or UPE channels?

UPE has parallel flanges, so bolts seat without tapered washers and connections are simpler. UPN has tapered flanges and remains common where drawings specify it. Compare the two on depth, weight and section modulus in the tables above.

Which standard replaced DIN 1025 and DIN 1026?

EN 10365 now gives the dimensions and section properties of I, H and U sections. The designations stayed the same, so an HEB 200 to DIN 1025-2 is an HEB 200 to EN 10365.
