Stainless steel bar weight chart: round, square, hexagon, flat bar and angle (kg/m)

Weight per metre of 304, 303 and 316L stainless round, square, hexagon and flat bar and equal angle, with the formulas and the weight of a 6 m bar.

Updated October 18, 2026

Weight per metre for the stainless steel bars and angles in our range: round bar in 304, 303 and 316L, square bar, hexagon bar, flat bar and equal angle. Use the tables to estimate the weight of a cutting list or check a delivery before you order.

How stainless bar weight is calculated

Stainless steel is slightly denser than carbon steel. The tables use 7.93 kg/dm³ for 304 and 7.98 kg/dm³ for 316L, against 7.85 kg/dm³ for carbon steel, so a stainless bar weighs about 1% more than the same carbon steel bar. 303 weighs practically the same as 304.

  • Round bar — d² × 0.006228 = kg/m for 304 (d² × 0.006267 for 316L). A Ø20 bar in 304 weighs 400 × 0.006228 = 2.49 kg/m.
  • Square bar — a² × 0.00793 = kg/m. A 20 mm square in 304 weighs 3.17 kg/m.
  • Hexagon bar — s² × 0.006867 = kg/m, where s is the size across flats. A 24 mm hexagon in 304 weighs 3.96 kg/m.
  • Flat bar — width × thickness × 0.00793 = kg/m. A 50 × 10 flat in 304 weighs 3.97 kg/m.
  • Equal angle — t × (2a − t) × 0.00793 = kg/m, a sharp-corner estimate. A 30 × 30 × 3 angle weighs 1.36 kg/m.

Rolled angles have a root radius, so a weighed bar can come out slightly heavier than the estimate. For the difference between the grades see 304 vs 316 stainless steel; carbon steel bar weights are in the steel bar weight chart.

How much does a 6 m stainless steel round bar weigh?

Multiply kg/m by 6. A Ø20 bar in 304 weighs 2.49 kg/m, so a 6 m bar weighs about 15.0 kg; a Ø50 bar weighs 15.57 kg/m, or about 93.4 kg per 6 m.

Is 316L heavier than 304?

Slightly. 316L has a density of about 7.98 kg/dm³ against 7.93 kg/dm³ for 304, so the same bar in 316L is about 0.6% heavier.

How do I work out the weight of a stainless flat bar?

Multiply width by thickness in mm and by 0.00793. A 100 × 10 flat in 304 weighs 100 × 10 × 0.00793 = 7.93 kg/m.

Why does a delivered bar not match the table exactly?

The tables use nominal sizes. Rolling and drawing tolerances, and the root radius on angles, make real bars a little heavier or lighter, so invoices are based on the weighed or calculated weight agreed in the order.
