Steel bar weight chart: flat, round, square and hexagon bar and equal angles (kg/m)
Weight per metre of steel flat, round, square and hexagon bar and equal angles 18×18 to 120×120, with the formulas behind each table and the weight of a 6 m bar.
Updated October 17, 2026
Weight per metre for the hot-rolled and cold-drawn steel bars and equal angles in our range: flat, round, square and hexagon bar and angles from 18×18 to 120×120 mm. Use the tables to estimate tonnage for a cutting list, check a delivery note or compare sizes before you order.
How bar weight is calculated
- Flat bar — width × thickness × 0.00785 = kg/m (mm). A 50 × 10 flat weighs 50 × 10 × 0.00785 = 3.93 kg/m.
- Round bar — d² × 0.006165 = kg/m. A Ø20 bar weighs 400 × 0.006165 = 2.47 kg/m.
- Square bar — a² × 0.00785 = kg/m. A 20 mm square weighs 3.14 kg/m.
- Hexagon bar — s² × 0.0068 = kg/m, where s is the size across flats. A 20 mm hexagon weighs 2.72 kg/m.
- Equal angle — roughly t × (2a − t) × 0.00785 = kg/m. The root radius adds steel, so catalogue weights are a little higher; the angle tables below already include it.
All values use a steel density of 7.85 kg/dm³. For tonnage: kg/m × length (m) × pieces ÷ 1000 = tonnes. For other shapes and materials use the weight calculator.

Grades and lengths
Bars and angles are supplied in S235JR to S355J2, ASTM A36 and A572, and SAE 1010 to 1060 carbon grades; see structural steel grades for what the grades mean. Standard length is 6 m, with 3 m also available for cold-drawn bar.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a 6 m steel round bar weigh?
Multiply kg/m by 6. A Ø16 bar weighs 1.58 kg/m, so a 6 m bar weighs about 9.5 kg; a Ø25 bar weighs 3.85 kg/m, or about 23.1 kg per 6 m.
How do I calculate the weight of a flat bar?
Multiply width by thickness in mm and by 0.00785 to get kg/m. A 100 × 10 flat bar weighs 100 × 10 × 0.00785 = 7.85 kg/m.
Why is a catalogue angle heavier than the formula?
Hot-rolled angles have a radius at the root and rounded toes. The root radius adds material, so a 50 × 50 × 5 angle weighs 3.77 kg/m, slightly more than the 3.73 kg/m from the simple formula.
Are cold-drawn and hot-rolled bars the same weight?
Yes, for the same nominal size the weight per metre is the same. Cold-drawn bar has tighter dimensional tolerances and a smoother surface, which matters for machining and fits.
