How to calculate aluminium profile weight

  • Square and rectangular tube — kg/m = 2 × (A + B − 2 × wall) × wall × 0.0027, with dimensions in mm. Example: 40 × 40 × 2 mm gives 2 × 76 × 2 × 0.0027 ≈ 0.82 kg/m.
  • Round tube — kg/m = (OD − wall) × wall × 0.00848. Example: 50 × 2 mm gives 48 × 2 × 0.00848 ≈ 0.81 kg/m.
  • Angle — kg/m = (A + B − thickness) × thickness × 0.0027. Example: 40 × 40 × 3 mm gives 77 × 3 × 0.0027 ≈ 0.62 kg/m.
  • Flat bar — kg/m = width × thickness × 0.0027. Example: 50 × 10 mm gives 1.35 kg/m. Flat bar in 6082 T6 is listed on the flat bar page.
  • The factors use a density of 2.70 kg/dm³. For other shapes use the weight calculator.

Aluminium or steel?

An aluminium profile weighs about a third of the same steel profile: 2.70 kg/dm³ against 7.85 kg/dm³. A 40 × 40 × 2 mm aluminium box section weighs about 0.82 kg/m; the same size in steel weighs about 2.4 kg/m. Aluminium is also about three times as flexible, so a frame of the same size deflects more. It does not rust, can be anodized or powder coated, and is easy to cut and drill. Steel sizes are in the hollow section tables.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 6 m length of 40 × 40 × 2 mm aluminium box section weigh?

About 4.9 kg: 40 × 40 × 2 mm square tube in 6063 T6 weighs 0.821 kg per metre.

What is aluminium box section?

Box section is the British name for square and rectangular aluminium tube. The sizes and weights are the same; only the name differs.

How do I calculate the weight of aluminium angle?

Multiply (A + B − thickness) by the thickness and by 0.0027, with dimensions in mm. A 50 × 50 × 3 mm angle gives 97 × 3 × 0.0027 ≈ 0.79 kg/m.

Is aluminium tube lighter than steel tube?

Yes, about three times lighter at the same size, because aluminium has a density of 2.70 kg/dm³ against 7.85 kg/dm³ for steel. It is also less stiff, so check deflection when replacing steel.
