Threaded rod sizes and weights: DIN 975 / DIN 976-1 metric rod from M4 to M64
Thread pitch, stress area and weight per metre of metric threaded rod from M4 to M64 in carbon steel class 4.8 and 8.8 and in A2 and A4 stainless steel.
Updated October 19, 2026
Size table for the threaded rod in our range: carbon steel rod in class 4.8 and class 8.8, and stainless steel rod in A2 (304) and A4 (316). Use it to estimate the weight of a delivery or to match nuts and coupling nuts to the rod. What the property classes mean is explained in the bolt grades guide.
DIN 975 and DIN 976-1
DIN 975 was the long-standing standard for threaded rod and is still the name most drawings and orders use. It has been replaced by DIN 976-1, whose form A is the same fully threaded rod. Both use the ISO metric coarse thread, so a rod of either name takes the same hex nuts.
How to read the table
- Pitch — distance between threads, the ISO coarse pitch for each size.
- Stress area — the cross-section used to calculate tensile strength, from ISO 898-1.
- Steel kg/m — weight per metre of carbon steel rod as listed on our size pages.
- A2/A4 kg/m — weight per metre of stainless rod, calculated from the pitch diameter at 7,93 kg/dm³.

Carbon steel rod is listed from M4 to M64 in 1 m lengths; A2 rod runs to M52 and A4 rod to M36. A rod weighs a little less than a round bar of the same nominal diameter, because the thread removes material: an M12 rod weighs about 0,73 kg/m against 0,89 kg/m for a 12 mm round bar.
Which class to choose
- Class 4.8 — general fixing, hangers for pipes and ducts, anchoring into chemical anchors where the design does not call for a higher class.
- Class 8.8 — where the rod is used like a high-strength bolt; combine it with class 8 nuts.
- A2 / A4 — outdoor, wet and food-plant service; A4 for chlorides and coastal sites. See the 304 vs 316 guide.
What to send with an order
Give the size, the class or stainless grade, the finish and the number of 1 m lengths, for example DIN 975 M16 class 8.8, zinc plated, 200 pcs or DIN 976-1 M12 A4, 50 pcs. Nuts and washers can be added to the same quote request.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an M12 threaded rod weigh?
An M12 carbon steel threaded rod weighs about 0,73 kg per metre; the A2 or A4 stainless rod weighs about the same.
What is the pitch of an M10 threaded rod?
The ISO coarse pitch of M10 is 1,5 mm. DIN 975 and DIN 976-1 rods use the coarse pitch unless a fine thread is ordered.
Is DIN 975 still valid?
DIN 975 has been replaced by DIN 976-1, whose form A is the same fully threaded rod, but DIN 975 is still widely used to order it.
