Square hollow sections (SHS / box profiles) are cold-formed and ERW-welded to EN 10219 in structural grade S235JR. Equal sides give the same bending capacity about both axes, so they are the default closed section for columns, posts, and frames that take load from more than one direction. The closed shape also resists torsion far better than an open channel of similar weight.
Typical uses include steel structures, gates and fencing, machine frames, mezzanines, roofing supports, and general fabrication. Choose uncoated mill (black) for shop-primed or painted work, red-oxide shop primer where a holding primer is enough until site coating, or hot-dip galvanized for outdoor exposure. For higher yield at the same size, step up to S355J2H (ST52) square box; for furniture and tighter tolerances, use cold-rolled CR / DKP square tube instead.
