ISO 898-2 class 5 slotted (castle / castellated) hex nuts to DIN 935 / ISO 7035. Radial slots in the crown take a split pin (cotter) through a drilled bolt, locking the nut in a discrete position. Listed M4–M52. Pair with class 4.8 bolts that have a pin hole.
The classic retention method on axles, clevis pins, turnbuckles, and linkages where the joint must not unscrew and a visual pin check is required. Castle nuts are not tightened to an arbitrary high preload and then pinned — the pin position and the specified nut rotation / castle alignment govern. Use class 5 with 4.8; step up class with the bolt.
