Stainless steel tube sizes and weights: round, square and rectangular tube in 304 and 316L

Size and weight tables for welded stainless steel round, square and rectangular tube in 304 and 316L: outside diameter, wall thickness and kg/m, the weight formulas, and how tube sizes relate to pipe and fittings.

Updated October 17, 2026

Stainless steel tube is ordered by outside dimensions, wall thickness and grade. The tables below list the welded round, square and rectangular tube sizes we supply in 304 (1.4301) and 316L (1.4404), with the weight per metre, so you can check a drawing, a cutting list or a freight estimate quickly.

How stainless tube is specified

  • Size — outside diameter × wall for round tube, such as 48.3 × 2 mm; side × side × wall for square and rectangular tube, such as 40 × 20 × 1.5 mm.
  • Grade — 304 for indoor, architectural and general use; 316L where chlorides, a coastal climate or cleaning chemicals are present. See 304 vs 316 stainless steel.
  • Standard — welded tube to EN 10217-7 or DIN 11850, as listed for each product.
  • Finish — pickled (mill) or ground and polished, for example to grit 240 or 320 for handrails and visible frames.
  • Length — the stock length for the size, or cut to length.

  • Pipe-size ODs — 21.3, 26.9, 33.7, 42.4, 48.3, 60.3, 76.1, 88.9, 114.3, 139.7, 168.3 and 219.1 mm follow the European pipe series, so they match flanges and butt-weld fittings of the same DN. See the fittings dimensions guide.
  • Inch-based ODs — 50.8 and 101.6 mm are 2 in and 4 in tube, common in food, dairy and handrail work.
  • Small ODs from 6 to 19 mm are instrument and light-frame tube.

How to calculate stainless tube weight

  • Round tube — kg/m = (OD − wall) × wall × 0.0249, with dimensions in mm. Example: 48.3 × 2 mm gives (48.3 − 2) × 2 × 0.0249 ≈ 2.31 kg/m.
  • Square and rectangular tube — kg/m ≈ 2 × (A + B − 2 × wall) × wall × 0.00793. Example: 40 × 20 × 2 mm gives 2 × (60 − 4) × 2 × 0.00793 ≈ 1.78 kg/m.
  • The factors use a density of 7.93 kg/dm³ for 304. 316L is about 1% heavier. For other sizes use the weight calculator.

Tube or pipe?

In stainless steel the two words are often used for the same product. Pipe usually means sizes made to carry fluids under pressure, ordered by DN or NPS and schedule; tube means sizes ordered by exact outside diameter and wall, used for structures, handrails, frames and hygienic lines. A 48.3 × 2 mm tube and a DN40 pipe with a 2 mm wall share the same outside diameter. For pipe schedules see the pipe schedule chart.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 48.3 × 2 mm stainless tube weigh?

A 48.3 × 2 mm 304 stainless tube weighs about 2.31 kg per metre, so a 6 m length weighs about 13.8 kg. In 316L it is about 1% heavier.

Which stainless tube is used for handrails?

Round tube of 42.4 or 48.3 mm, or 50.8 mm (2 in), with a 1.5 to 2 mm wall is common. Use 304 indoors and 316L outdoors near the coast, around pools or where de-icing salt is used.

Do stainless tube sizes match pipe fittings?

Tubes with pipe-series outside diameters, such as 33.7, 48.3 or 60.3 mm, match flanges and butt-weld fittings of the same DN. Inch-based tube sizes such as 50.8 mm need fittings made for that diameter.

How do I calculate the weight of stainless square tube?

Multiply 2 × (A + B − 2 × wall) by the wall and by 0.00793, with dimensions in mm. A 40 × 40 × 2 mm tube gives 2 × 76 × 2 × 0.00793 ≈ 2.41 kg/m.
